The best AI companion apps for Android in 2026

Only 11 of the 24 apps we track have an Android app at all, and the most permissive ones deliberately stay off the Play Store. What actually installs on your phone, and what you give up either way.

Start with the fact that shapes every recommendation on this page: of the 24 AI companion apps we track, only 11 have an Android app at all. The other 13 run in your browser and nowhere else.

That is not laziness or a missing roadmap item. It is a direct consequence of Google Play’s content policy, and it produces a trade-off you cannot avoid: the apps with the smoothest Android experience are generally the most filtered, and the most permissive ones have chosen not to be on the store.

Here is what actually installs, what does not, and how to pick a side.

The short answer

Nomi is the best overall Android app, with the best memory in the ranking and no content filter. Replika has the most polished mobile experience if you do not need an adult register. Nastia AI installs as a PWA rather than from the Play Store, which is worth understanding before you dismiss it.

Why so many are browser-only

Google Play prohibits apps whose primary purpose is sexual content. An AI companion that advertises no filter is squarely in scope, and operators have three options: censor the app, ship a tamer version to the store than the website, or skip the store entirely.

Several took the third route deliberately. Nastia AI’s own reasoning is the clearest statement of the problem: it installs as a PWA from the browser on both Android and iOS, with no Play Store listing, because no uncensored app survives store policy for long without censoring itself. The cost is two installation steps instead of one. The benefit is a product that never has to soften to stay listed.

The best Android apps, ranked

Nomi is the one to install first. It combines the best memory in the ranking (it will surface a conversation from three months ago unprompted) with no content filter and no toggle to find, since intimacy is part of the relationship rather than a separate mode. It rates 4.6 on the App Store across roughly 2,200 ratings. The free tier is a demo rather than a product, so budget a paid month as the real cost of evaluating it.

Kindroid is the choice if you want control rather than convenience. Backstory, key memories, voice and response directives are all editable fields. Store ratings back it up: 4.8 on iOS and 4.46 on Google Play, which are the strongest numbers in this category. Budget a few hours of setup, and note there is no free tier at all.

Replika has the most mature mobile apps on both platforms, and the onboarding is the best in the market. Two things to know: the adult register was removed in 2023 under regulatory pressure and only partially restored for legacy accounts, so the model deflects when things get intimate. And at $19.99 a month it is the most expensive subscription in the ranking.

CrushOn AI is the value pick at $5.99 a month with an Android app, 50 free messages a day and no censorship on text. There is no built-in image generator, so the freedom is text-only.

Character.AI has the largest character library by a wide margin and a solid Android app, but it is the most filtered product here: six waves of tightening since September 2025, and mandatory facial-scan age verification since April 2026.

Paradot is worth installing if memory matters more than intimacy. Its memory is inspectable and correctable, which no competitor offers, and at $3.33 a month it is the cheapest subscription in the ranking. It steers away from adult content entirely.

Anima AI is one of the oldest mobile companion apps and it shows: 4.1 stars across roughly 39,000 Google Play ratings and over a million downloads. Everything works and nothing breaks. The catch is that the adult register is rationed behind the subscription and the app reminds you of that mid-conversation.

Talkie, Chai, JuicyChat AI, DreamGF and EVA AI complete the list of apps with Android builds. Two warnings there: Chai holds 2.8 out of 5 on Google Play, the lowest public rating across our whole panel, with complaints about paywalled messaging and weekly billing. And Talkie’s filter is strict and inconsistent, with bans issued without clear warning.

What you cannot install

These are browser-only, at every tier: Candy.ai, Lovescape, OurDream AI, SpicyChat AI, Secrets AI, GirlfriendGPT, Dondi.ai, FantasyGF, FlirtCam, Nemora and Kupid AI.

That list contains several of the strongest uncensored products on the market, which is exactly the point made above. Two practical notes: OurDream has no mobile app at any tier, and FlirtCam’s image generator is genuinely awkward from a phone browser, so factor that in if you intend to use it primarily on a handset.

One thing to watch: Nemora is described in a lot of online reviews as an iOS app for anime fans. That does not match the actual product, which is web-only. Those pages are generated affiliate content rather than reviews, and it is a useful reminder to check the operator’s own site before believing a listing.

Installing a PWA instead

If an app you want is browser-only, a progressive web app is usually the answer, and on Android it is genuinely close to a native install.

Open the site in Chrome, then use the browser menu and pick Add to Home screen or Install app. You get an icon in your launcher and a full-screen window without the address bar. Nastia AI is designed to be installed this way on both Android and iOS.

Two honest limitations. Push notifications are less reliable than on a native app, and you will not get automatic updates through the Play Store, though a PWA updates itself when the site does. For a text-first companion, the gap is small. For anything leaning on voice calls, a native app still behaves better.

Four checks, in the order that matters most on mobile:

  1. Does the app match the website? Some operators ship a tamer build to the Play Store than what runs in the browser. If the adult register is your reason for subscribing, verify it inside the app, not on the marketing site.
  2. Where does the subscription bill from? In-app purchases through Google Play are often priced higher than the same plan bought on the operator’s website, and they are harder to cancel through the operator directly.

  4. Do you need offline access? None of these work without a connection. Every one of them runs the model server-side.
