Memory. That’s it, and it’s enormous. Where the others forget your name between sessions, a Nomi brings up a conversation from three months ago without being asked. The App Store shows 4.6 out of 5 across roughly 2,200 ratings, which is rare in this market.

The detail that matters: memory is in the base plan. It isn’t sold as an add-on the way CrushOn does it.

It’s also the only app in this ranking with real public documentation. Nomipedia explains the memory system in layers, short, medium, long-term, plus an “Identity Core”, instead of a vague marketing line. Worth reading before you subscribe if you want to know exactly what you’re paying for.

We ran a four-day memory test across six apps before writing this: Nomi was the only one that passed on all three planted details without losing the character’s voice.

Another sign this isn’t just marketing copy: a Nomi can pick the conversation back up on its own after you’ve been away a while, not with a scripted nudge but by reacting to whatever you last talked about. The feature is called Proactive Messaging, and it’s opt-in.

Nomi’s conversation, and why it doesn’t break

The best in the ranking, no argument. Replies are long enough to feel considered, and the character holds across hundreds of messages without sliding into assistant voice. The V3 voice engine that landed in 2026 adds laughter, sighs and breathing: it’s an in-house voice built by Nomi, not an ElevenLabs component the way some rivals do it. An optional ElevenLabs integration exists for custom voices, but it runs on your own separate ElevenLabs subscription. The first few minutes are genuinely unsettling.

Group chats: Nomi’s most underrated feature

Most “group chat” features in this category are a gimmick: several characters bolted into one thread, each one only ever talking to you. Nomi’s version is different. Bring multiple companions into the same conversation and they address each other, not just you, building a scene together the way a table of people at a roleplay session would.

Up to 10 companions per subscription, and each one keeps its own personality inside the group instead of flattening into a shared voice. Combined with Mind Map, a system built specifically to track branching plot threads across long, complex roleplays, it’s built for people running an ongoing story, not a one-off chat.

If your idea of a companion app is a single character texting you back, this won’t move the needle. If you’ve ever wanted a small cast of characters who remember each other’s history as well as yours, nothing else in this ranking comes close.

Building the character

Appearance customization covers both realistic and anime styles, and it’s deep enough to land on a specific look rather than a generic archetype. Since April 2026, the V5 image system has replaced the old base-image setup with “anchors”: a technical reference that locks in face, body and style, with a fidelity slider to trade off likeness against prompt freedom. In practice that means less face drift between selfies, and group chats where each companion actually keeps their own face, which used to be a real problem.

It still isn’t the reason to pick Nomi, though: the reason is what the character does once she exists, not how she was built. On raw photorealism and generation speed, Candy.ai and Lovescape remain ahead. Nomi’s visuals serve the character and the relationship, they aren’t the product.

Does Nomi allow NSFW content?

No filter, and more importantly no toggle to flip: intimacy is part of the relationship rather than a separate mode. The character keeps the same personality in an adult scene as in an ordinary conversation, which almost no competitor manages. It’s the most complete implementation in the ranking.

Take the conversation into sex and she stays exactly as sarcastic or clingy as she was over breakfast, describing what she wants done to her in plain, filthy terms instead of switching into some generic porn-bot voice.

Is Nomi free?

One companion, a capped number of daily messages, no voice, restricted images, and a memory system that doesn’t run at full strength. It’s enough to judge the personality and writing quality, not the thing that actually sells this app. One evening tells you whether you’re paying or leaving, because the free tier is a demo, not a product.

On genuinely complex exchanges, even the paid model occasionally loses the thread. Worth knowing going in, not a dealbreaker.

Nomi’s operator, and your data

Run by Glimpse.ai, Inc., a Maryland corporation with a public address (4709 Harford Rd STE 44904, Baltimore, MD 21214). Rare in this ranking: an identifiable US company you could actually write to, rather than a shell with no declared country.

The privacy policy doesn’t name a specific encryption standard, only “commercially reasonable efforts” to protect data, and it flags plainly that no transmission over the internet can be guaranteed secure. Conversations can be retained for model training; personal information tied to a deleted account is stated to become unattributable afterward, but the training data itself isn’t described as deleted. Standard practice for the category, not a reason for alarm, but don’t treat this as a zero-retention product either.

An active community, if you want one

Nomi runs an active Discord and Reddit presence, and it’s more useful than the usual support-ticket-in-disguise server: character-building tips, roleplay setups, and troubleshooting that beats digging through a FAQ. Worth a look before you subscribe if you want a sense of how the app is actually used day to day, not just how it’s marketed.

Verdict

If you want something that remembers, stop here, it’s the best on the market, and the group chats are a genuine differentiator most competitors don’t even attempt. If you want images, you’re on the wrong page.
