• November 2025: after lawsuits tied to teenage suicides, a separate model for minors and open chat closed to under-18s.
• March 2026: swipes and retries capped on free accounts, with ads layered on top.
• April 2026: age verification by face scan at signup.

SimilarWeb measured the result: roughly 29% fewer monthly active users over the period.

What is still good

The library, still. Millions of community-published characters, a variety no competitor comes close to, and conversation quality that is surprising for something you can use free. Group chats work well.

Does Character.AI allow NSFW content?

The strictest filter in the entire ranking. It cuts scenes mid-sentence, without warning, and it is not limited to adult material: violence and several dramatic registers trigger the same interruption. Users describe it as unpredictable, you can talk for hours and then hit a wall for no visible reason. This is not a setting but a structural choice, and there is no reason to expect it to loosen.

A conversation heading toward anything intimate gets swapped mid-reply for a generic, cheerful redirection, with no explanation of what triggered it.

The free tier is no longer the same product

This is what dated comparisons miss. Between daily caps, advertising and the face scan, the 2026 free tier has little in common with the one that built the service’s reputation.

Verdict

Still the best place to explore a lot of personalities cheaply. But if you want a continuing relationship or any intimate register at all, every month makes this a worse choice.
