Free AI girlfriend: free vs paid, what you actually get

Almost every app in our ranking has a free tier. Very few are usable beyond a few days, and the reasons differ enough that “free” tells you almost nothing on its own.

This guide maps where the paywall actually sits, which free tiers survive a week of real use, what you can try without signing up or entering a card, and how the advertised subscription price relates to what you end up paying.

What makes a good free tier

An AI girlfriend, a virtual girlfriend: the labels all describe the same thing, a chat app that holds a character, and none of them tells you whether the free tier is good for anything beyond nudging you to pay. Three criteria separate a genuine free tier from a disguised trial:

• Message volume. A reasonable daily quota, otherwise the conversation stops after a few exchanges.
• Memory. Whether the character still knows who you are after a few days.
• What stays behind the paywall. Long-term memory, images, voice: knowing what is missing avoids the bad surprise after a week of attachment to the character.

The four places the paywall sits

Every app in this category restricts the free tier somewhere. Knowing which lever an app pulls tells you whether its free version is a product or a demo.

• Message volume. The most common limit: a daily quota, then a wait. Caps range from a few messages to genuinely unlimited.
• Memory. Several apps reserve long-term memory for subscribers, which quietly makes the free tier a different product rather than a smaller one. This is the restriction that matters most and the one users notice last.
• Voice and images. Almost always paid, and often metered on top of the subscription rather than included in it.
• Response speed. Free users get queued at peak hours, sometimes alongside ads.

When free is genuinely enough

Three apps let you run a real evaluation, or even stay indefinitely, without paying.

SpicyChat is the strongest free offer in the ranking. Text messages are unlimited without paying, not 50 a day, not 15, and the catalogue runs to roughly 300,000 characters. The trade-offs are queues at peak hours and ads, which testers describe as present without being intrusive. Multilingual support across 12 languages arrived in April 2026 and is available on the free plan. The flaw is sharp if you want an ongoing relationship: memory drops off around 20 messages, which makes it an excellent place to browse a catalogue and a poor place to get attached.

CrushOn AI changed its terms in April 2026, and most published comparisons have not caught up. The free tier moved from 100 messages a month to 50 a day, roughly 1,500 a month for daily use, fifteen times more than before. That is no longer an aggressive cap. The trade-off is ads on the free tier and an 8K context window against 16K when paying, so context loss shows up sooner in long sessions.

Replika offers the most polished free experience. Onboarding is the best on the market, and the free tier is genuinely usable, which is rare here. Paradot is the other honest option, with a free tier that includes some memory from one session to the next, which many competitors lack at this level, and a subscription price of $3.33/month if you continue. It bets on continuity rather than variety: you start from a single profile that you shape over time, not from a catalogue.

Character.AI used to belong on this list without qualification. It still gives you the library and decent conversation for free, but between daily caps, advertising and mandatory face-scan age verification, the 2026 free tier has little in common with the one that built the service’s reputation. Since April 2026, age verification is a face scan at sign-up, so anonymous testing is no longer possible.

Nastia AI is run by a French company subject to GDPR. Its free tier lets you create a companion and chat; everything involving images, video, voice and the intimate register is paid, so do not count on it to judge those. Memory is capped at 40 entries with about two weeks of context recall, and there is no mobile app: it installs as a PWA from the browser on iOS and Android.

Replika’s free tier lets you create a companion and set its personality with trait sliders, but long-term memory and some advanced relationship features move quickly to the subscription.

Can you try one without signing up or entering a card?

Three things get confused here.

No credit card: this is the norm in the category. Every app mentioned here lets you open an account and chat without entering a payment method. Kupid AI even advertises it as a selling point, which says a lot about industry practice.

No sign-up at all: in practice, no. A companion app has to attach your conversations and the character’s memory to an account, and a truly anonymous app would lose your character each time you close the tab. At best you get a few messages in open access before the registration wall, as on FlirtCam.

No identity check: this is what changed in 2026. Character.AI now requires a face scan at sign-up. If you would rather not hand your face to a companion platform, skip it and look at Nastia AI, CrushOn AI or SpicyChat.

One tip that applies everywhere: use a dedicated email address. These accounts hold your most personal conversations, and you do not want a database leak linking them to your main address.

When free is only a demo

Some free tiers exist to show you what you are missing, and budgeting for them honestly is better than being surprised.

Nomi, our top-rated app, is explicit about it: the free tier is a demo, not a product, and one evening tells you whether you are paying or leaving.

Kindroid goes further with no meaningful free tier at all. You pay at least one month ($13.99) simply to evaluate, and its MAX plan runs $59.99/month, among the most expensive on the market.

Image-first apps use a specific variant: FlirtCam’s free tier is deliberately tame, with safe-for-work content, blurred images and a few messages before mandatory registration. DreamGF blurs images and tightens quotas the same way. You cannot judge what you are buying before you buy it, which is why we score these as paid rather than free. Candy.ai follows the same inverted logic: the look is polished, but the free conversation is clearly more limited.

In every case the commercial strategy is the same: make the free version convincing enough to create attachment, then limit precisely the feature that would make that attachment satisfying over time. That is not a criticism, it is simply the business model of the category.

The pattern that actually inflates your bill

Credits metered on top of a subscription are the thing to watch, because the advertised price is not the price paid.

FantasyGF is the clearest example. It sells a subscription, then bills everything else in tokens against a 100-token monthly allowance:

That allowance buys roughly three minutes of voice calling per month. The top-ups, not the subscription, are the actual business model.

Candy.ai runs the same hybrid structure: the subscription covers unlimited text, while media runs on separately billed tokens. A large share of user complaints lands exactly here, because tokens drain faster than expected when you have not understood the mechanism.

OurDream AI adds a second-order cost: independent testing puts its video failure rate around 40%, and a failed generation still spends your tokens.

Three billing tricks worth recognising

Weekly pricing. Kupid AI bills EUR 12.99 per week, which reads as cheap and totals around EUR 675 a year, roughly triple a typical annual subscription. It ranks last in our list (3.1) largely for this reason.

Disguised annual commitment. Candy.ai shows $13.99 a month on monthly billing but $3.99 on annual, a gap of one to three that the sign-up page does not exactly highlight.

Permanent countdowns. Nemora displays an “up to 80% off” banner with a countdown frozen at 00h 00m 00s. On one August date, the same site advertised an “Easter promotion, -75%”. No deadline in this category is real, so urgency should never drive the decision.

What a month of evaluation actually costs

Entry prices in our ranking span from $3.33 (Paradot) to $19.99 (Replika), with most apps clustered between $12 and $15. That spread matters less than the metering: a $12.99 subscription with heavy token use can cost more than a $19.99 all-inclusive one.

Always check the billing period before confirming, not just the number. A practical budget:

• Free evaluation possible: SpicyChat, CrushOn AI, Replika, Paradot. Cost: $0 for a genuine week.
• One month required to judge: Nomi ($14.99), Kindroid ($13.99). Treat it as the price of the trial, not a commitment.
• Check token maths first: FantasyGF, Candy.ai, OurDream AI, FlirtCam. Work out what a heavy week costs before touching an annual plan.

The rule that saves the most money

Never buy an annual plan during your first month. Annual billing genuinely saves around 30% on most apps, and roughly 50% on some, but it only pays off if you are still using the app in month four, which most people are not.

Run the free tier or a single month first, test memory retention with a specific detail after a few days, then commit once you know the app survives contact with your actual habits.

Creating your own companion for free

Picking a character from a catalogue and building one from scratch are two different uses, and not every free app allows the second. The free tiers of Nastia AI and Replika let you create a companion and define its personality without paying, the first by description, the second with trait sliders. On Character.AI and SpicyChat creation is also open, but you write a character sheet for the public catalogue rather than a private companion.

The limit is almost always the same and only shows up after a few days: creating the character is free, making it remember you is not. It is the feature publishers reserve most systematically for the subscription.

Do you need a mobile app?

Everything here can be used from a browser, without going through the App Store or Google Play. If you want a real mobile app, Replika and Character.AI offer one. Nastia AI is PWA-only, installed from the browser on iOS and Android, a deliberate choice since no unfiltered app survives store rules for long without censoring itself.
