How to choose an AI companion app in 2026

Most people pick an AI companion app on instinct, subscribe, and cancel three weeks later. The category makes this easy: every app markets the same promises (memory, personality, realism) while delivering radically different products underneath.

This guide works through the seven decisions that actually determine whether you will still be using an app in six months, with examples from the apps in our ranking.

1. Memory or novelty? These are opposite products

This is the single decision that predicts satisfaction best, and almost nobody makes it consciously.

Memory-first apps invest engineering in remembering you across months. Nomi (rated 4.6, our top pick) runs a persistent memory graph with continuity over weeks, and its memory is inspectable and correctable, which no competitor offers. Novelty-first apps invest in catalogue size instead. Character.AI offers millions of user-created characters; SpicyChat carries roughly 200,000 community bots.

The trade-off is real and measurable. On Character.AI, cross-session memory is the platform’s most-cited weakness: context decays on long conversations, there is no memory across characters, and relationship state resets between sessions. That is not a bug, it is the consequence of optimising for breadth.

The test: if you catch yourself re-explaining who you are every session, you bought the wrong type.

2. How much control do you want over personality?

Three levels exist, and the right one depends on how much you enjoy configuration.

Hand-written control. Kindroid (rated 4.5) lets you write the directives, key memories and response style yourself. The result is the most precisely tailored companion available, but budget a few hours to build your character and understand the memory types. If you want something that works in five minutes, you will hate it.

Guided sliders. Replika gives you adjustable traits and a polished onboarding path. Less precision, far less effort.

Preset catalogues. Most image-first apps hand you a menu of archetypes. Fast, but two users often end up with near-identical characters.

3. Are images the point, or a bonus?

Almost nobody nails both conversation and images, and the pattern is consistent enough to plan around.

Image-first apps (Candy.ai, EVA AI, Secrets AI, Lovescape) have noticeably weaker conversation. Conversation-first apps (Nomi, Kindroid, Paradot) have acceptable but unremarkable images.

If you do want media, check the failure rate and the metering, not the marketing samples. A generated video that fails still costs you tokens.

4. How does the app actually bill you?

The advertised subscription price is frequently not the price paid. Three patterns to recognise:

• Tokens metered on top of a subscription. FantasyGF sells a subscription, then bills everything else in tokens: voice calls run 30 tokens per minute against a 100-token monthly allowance, which is roughly three minutes of calling before you top up. A large share of user complaints in this category lands here.
• Weekly billing. Kupid AI prices by the week, which disguises the annual total (around EUR 675/year) and is the main reason it ranks last at 3.1.
• Permanent fake discounts. Nemora displays an “up to 80% off” banner with a countdown frozen at 00h 00m 00s. On one August date its homepage advertised an “Easter promotion, -75%”. Nothing about these deadlines is real, so never let urgency drive the purchase.

Work out what a heavy week costs before committing to a year.

5. What does the content filter actually allow?

Filters are a structural choice, not a setting, and they change without warning.

Character.AI runs the strictest filter in our ranking: it cuts scenes mid-sentence, and it does not stop at adult content, since violence and several dramatic registers trigger the same interruption. Six waves of tightening since September 2025 (Disney takedowns, a separate model for minors, mandatory face-scan age verification in April 2026) cost it roughly 29% of monthly active users, per SimilarWeb.

Replika offers the cautionary tale. In February 2023 it removed adult content overnight, including ordinary romantic roleplay. An academic study published in Socius measured the fallout: 59% of users felt the app had lost its core function, 16% described real emotional distress, and 19% raised the idea of legal action. It has not come back and will not.

The lesson is not “pick an uncensored app”. It is that a filter can change after you have invested months in a character, so weight it accordingly.

6. What does the privacy policy actually say?

Look for four things: whether conversations train future models, whether you can export your data, whether deletion is real deletion, and where the company is registered.

Jurisdiction is the item most people skip and the one that determines whether your rights are enforceable. Among the uncensored apps: Kupid AI and Nemora operate from Cyprus, FantasyGF from Romania, and Dondi.ai publishes no country at all, so you know neither where your data sits nor under which jurisdiction to reclaim it.

Two operators are the exception. Nastia AI is registered in Paris, and FlirtCam lists a full address in Nitra, Slovakia. In both cases there is a public address and someone identifiable behind the service. That said, EU-registered does not mean transparent about everything.

Replika took a European privacy fine in 2025, so a European registration is a floor, not a guarantee.

7. What does leaving cost?

Check that you can export your history before you have six months of it. Most apps in this category make the exit harder than the entrance, and conversation export is rare enough that it is worth treating as a feature.

Also check whether your character’s personality can leave with you. In practice it cannot: what you build stays proprietary to the platform, which is why the memory and filter decisions above compound over time.

The seven-day method

1. Pick your type first (memory or novelty), not your app.
2. Run the free tier for a week. Mention a specific detail on day one and check on day four whether it was retained. That single test separates real memory from a marketing claim faster than any review.
3. Read the billing page before the feature page. Look specifically for tokens, weekly rates and top-ups.
4. If there is no usable free tier, budget one month as the price of the trial. Kindroid is the clearest case: it has no meaningful free tier, so evaluation costs $13.99.

One correction worth carrying: free tiers change constantly in both directions, and most published comparisons are out of date. CrushOn AI moved its free tier from 100 messages a month to 50 a day, roughly fifteen times more generous than the cap most reviews still quote. SpicyChat added multilingual support across 12 languages in April 2026 and keeps base text unlimited on the free plan. Character.AI went the other way, tightening caps and adding ads.
